Local 3021 In Our Community

The firefighters of Spruce Groves have a long history of supporting our community and Local 3021 is proud to extend that tradition. We actively donate many hours of our time to help those in need thru our work with charitable organizations like Muscular Dystrophy Canada, The Run for the Cure and The Weekend to end Breast Cancer.

Local 3021 has put together another successful caleneder for the year 2012. With the help of ten cancer survivor's featured in this year's calender, the popularity of Local 3021's Breast cancer calender has continued.

In the second year of participating in the Movember campain, Local 3021 raised a total of $4,450 fundraising through the month of November along with a silent auction held at Shots lounge on November 30.

Local 3021 had two members complete the Edmonton Run for the Cure in 2011 Sarah Roth, Glen Rea and firefighter Rea's family. Local 3021 was able to raise $1,200 in 2011.

Representing Local 3021 in Calgary, Alberta is Gary Lucas, Ryan Harley, Jordan Hoffman, and Bryce McNalley. The fire fighters of Local 3021 successfully complete the 60km walk over two days dressed in Pink Bunker gear. They were able to Raise $8,400 in support of Alberta's Cancer free Movement.

Local 3021 had four members in attendance at the Alberta legislature to support the fight against occupational cancers, here they are with the honorable Thomas Lukaszuk Minister of Employment and Immigration and the Premier of Alberta, the honorable Ed Stelmach.

Local 3021 had four members on the roof from February 22 to February 25th. During this time they endured up to —30°(Celsius) with a wind chill reaching around the —40° at times. Our 28 member department raised $16000 by fundraising during the event. We held multiple boot drives out front of the fire hall where the citizens generously donated.

Movember was a huge success this year. We shattered our goal of $3000 by raising over $8600 through online donations and a live auction of donated gifts by local businesses. The Movember Gala party was graisiously hosted by Shotz Family Sports Lounge at the TLC.

2010 Weekend to End Womens' Cancers

The Spruce Grove Fire team walking 60kms for cancer. Team made up of Fire Fighters Rob Good, Sarah Roth, Cory Scott and Cliff Shepherd. Our team was successful and we were able raise $10,000 for cancer in the year 2010.

2009 Run for the Cure The Run for the Cure Edmonton 2009, for the second time this year Spruce Grove Fire Services Local 3021 had four firefighter’s don the pink bunker gear. From the left are; Jaysy Lang, Cory Scott, Alan Hofsink, and Cameron Kelso. This was a five km run/walk which takes place in the downtown core of Edmonton which included more than 17,000 runners last year all raising $26.5 million.

2009 Weekend to End Breast Cancer

In what’s very quickly becoming a SGFS local 3021 tradition seven firefighters, four of whom donned the pink bunker gear; Darryl Clark, Ryan Harley, Brandon Novak, Gary Lucas, Rob Good, Mark Ratch and James Dressler who all participated in the Edmonton leg of the Weekend to End Breast Cancer run/walk. This is a 60km run/walk that takes place over two days.

Between the two events Spruce Grove Local 3021 fundraising committee managed to raise over $13,000 towards cancer research. As a result of the success of the pink bunker gear, a 2010 calendar was produced and released in October of 2009. This calendar has been a great success in raising over $10,000 towards the 2010 year in continuing the pink bunker gear challenge.

Muscular Dystrophy fundraising also had a good year with boot drives and spare change canisters at local businesses raising over $4600 in 2009. A new record for Local 3021!!!

September 20, 2008 saw the Local 3021 host the first Smokin the Spouse. Led by Rob Jonker, Cory Gartner and Al Hofsink, families of union members as well as support staff for Spruce Grove Fire Services and their families spent the day learning what it is like to be a firefighter. Events at the training grounds included: fire extinguisher training, vehicle extrication including using the “jaws of life” and an opportunity to go into a controlled live fire container to experience the smoke and heat of a real fire.

2008 The Run for the Cure

October 05, 2008 saw three members of local 3021 participate in the Run for the Cure in Edmonton. Wearing custom made pink bunker gear donated by Starfield Lion, Rob Good, Gary Lucas, and James Dressler walked the 5km route with approximately 10,000 people including many breast cancer survivors. Raising just over $2000 for research for breast cancer, the pink bunker suits brought lots of extra attention to the group, including a photo opportunity with CTV Edmonton news anchor and honorary spokesperson Carrie Doll.

Thanks once again to all those who attended the “Fill the boot for MD” drive that was held at Safeway on August 23, 2008. We once again rose to the challenge and exceeded last year’s total by over $650 for a total of $3922.50. We couldn’t have done it with the help of all those who graciously volunteered their time. Thanks once again for a successful fundraiser!
